The new and improved Leading Through Health System Change Planning Tool supports public health departments and their partners in navigating challenges and opportunities introduced by health reform. The tool is a one-stop resource that supports development of action plans for health system transformation. It features an interactive tutorial and guide to help public health leaders respond strategically to the legal, administrative, and financial challenges and opportunities created by a health reform-catalyzed health system transformation.
The Georgia Health Policy Center (GHPC) works to improve the lives of those who are aging and disabled. As part of these efforts, members of GHPC ‘s long-term services and supports team presented “The New Medicaid HCBS Settings Rule: What You Need to Know” at the Georgia Gerontology Society 2016 annual conference (Aug. 10; Jekyll Island, Ga.) The presentation helped to translate the complexities of the final rule for HCBS providers as they begin planning to meet the 2019 compliance deadline.
The Georgia Health Policy Center (GHPC) presented certificates to the first 13 graduates of the Health Care Finance and Systems Thinking Learning Series on July 21. The series was developed for senior leaders in the Georgia Department of Community Health’s (DCH’s) Medical Assistance Plans Division, which administers the state’s Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids programs.
Georgia SHAPE, the Governor’s childhood obesity initiative, awarded 26 schools $104,000 in physical activity and nutrition grants for the 2016-2017 school year. The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) administers the grant program while the Georgia Health Policy Center (GHPC) provides technical assistance (TA) to the school grantees as they plan and implement programs and policies to improve the overall health of their students.

Use of Preventive Measures Lacking With Sickle Cell Disease Preventive treatments are known to prevent major complications associated with sickle cell disease, including pneumococcal infection and stroke. However, many young children are not receiving these effective preventive measures, according to a study co-authored by the Georgia Health Policy Center, published in the July sickle cell-focused supplement to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
Paper Offers Strategies to Improve Rural Access to Care in Georgia The health care safety net is vulnerable, particularly in Georgia’s rural areas, according to a study published by the Georgia Health Policy Center in the spring supplement to the Journal of Georgia Public Health Association, Two Georgias: Addressing Health Equity in Rural Georgia. But in a time of health system transformation, there are steps rural providers can take to enhance the sustainability of the rural safety net.
Philanthropic Collaborative for a Healthy Georgia Serves as Pooled Funding Model The Philanthropic Collaborative for a Healthy Georgia brings together many emerging dynamics being used by collaboratives to address large societal problems including pooling funding from multiple private foundations; full-fledged cross-sector collaboration; and utilization of a third-party intermediary to facilitate the effort. These features are highlighted in a paper about the collaborative published in Foundation Review. In addition to implementing pooled funding with multi-foundation participation, the collaborative was able to align its investments to complement and leverage public funds.
