Social Disconnection
Social Disconnection
The Georgia Department of Human Services’ Division of Aging Services (DAS) received federal funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act to adapt services to meet increased demand and respond to other challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, including social disconnection. Social disconnection, which includes social isolation and loneliness, is a long-standing issue among older adults, and public health measures meant to stop the spread of the virus have exacerbated the issue among older adults and other vulnerable groups.
As an initial step to combat this growing problem, DAS worked with the Georgia Health Policy Center to identify existing evidence-based measurement tools for assessing social disconnection among DAS service populations. GHPC conducted a literature review and rapid environmental scan, and provided recommendations on tool selection, implementation, potential avenues for intervention, and considerations for sustainability. These recommendations will support the state’s work to address social disconnection among older adults throughout and beyond the pandemic.
