Teen Pregnancy Prevention Through Skills, Knowledge and Youth Empowerment
Teen Pregnancy Prevention Through Skills, Knowledge and Youth Empowerment
The Fulton County Board of Health was awarded a five-year pregnancy prevention grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to expand its Skills, Knowledge and Youth Empowerment (SKYE) program.
The SKYE program provides teens and their parents and caregivers access to a range of programs, workshops, services, and leadership opportunities to help youth protect themselves from unplanned pregnancy, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections by supporting their growth and development across all areas of their lives. SKYE initiatives help develop the skills, knowledge, and sense of empowerment teens need to make the decisions that will nurture and sustain their health and overall well-being. Research shows that youth who feel empowered and strong will also make healthy and safe decisions around their sexual activity.
Teen pregnancy is a complex social issue that requires a strategic, targeted, systems approach. The Georgia Health Policy Center (GHPC) is supporting the Fulton County Board of Health in capacity building and meeting design and facilitation. Additionally, GHPC is supporting data collection and focus groups (parents, youth, youth-serving agencies, and other partners) to understand the impact of SKYE activities and facilitating steering committees and youth council meetings.
